FBA statement on final farm bill agreement.

Statement from Jim Baldwin, CEO

“After two years of consideration, both the House and Senate have passed a Farm Bill – important legislation that governs many key nutrition programs.

The 2018 Farm Bill protects funding to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), our nation’s most effective anti-hunger program. SNAP helps roughly 90,000 Alaskans put food on the table, including children, seniors, working families, and people with disabilities. We are thrilled that the Farm Bill protects and strengthens this critical program.

This bill increases funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides food boxes to low-income families, and is our biggest source of food to rural Alaska. The bill also provides helpful changes to many other provisions in nutrition programs, such as expanded certification for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP, senior boxes), investments in SNAP Employment and Training pilots, and Alaska-specific provisions including micro-grants to address food security and increased liability protection for traditional foods. In addition to strong nutrition provisions, this bill also gives certainty to our growers and producers, who are important partners in the fight to address hunger.

We would like to thank Senator Sullivan and Congressman Young for supporting this final legislation. We would also like to thank Senator Murkowski, who although unable to support the final version of the bill for other issues, has been a tremendous advocate for SNAP, and played a key role in ensuring its protection in the final Farm Bill.

This bipartisan legislation is a win for Food Bank of Alaska, our partners, and the people we serve. It provides peace of mind to those facing hunger that nutrition programs will be there when they need assistance. This is certainly something we can all celebrate this holiday season.”

The bill is expected to be signed by the President soon. To learn more about issues like the Farm Bill, and how to get involved, sign up for our action alerts!
