Great Alaskan Bake Sale

Fact: Cookies help end childhood hunger.

Or at least this fact is true when you participate in the Great Alaskan Bake Sale. On July 4 and 11, the Bake Sale returns to Anchorage from 11 a.m. — 1 p.m. During this time, teen volunteers will sell goodies such as peanut butter cookies, Rice Krispy squares and mini chocolate cakes from the Key Bank Plaza in downtown Anchorage at 5th Avenue and F Street. All proceeds go to Food Bank of Alaska (FBA) to support programs feeding children in need and the purchase of kid-friendly foods.

Now in its third year, the Great Alaskan Bake Sale is supported by the work of Westcoast Connection, a teen travel company based out of Montreal, Canada. Volunteers make the treats themselves under the guidance of chefs Grace Huhndorf and Kathleen Davis and with the support of Allen and Petersen Kitchen and Appliance Center.

During each of the first two weeks in July, 30 teen volunteers also visit FBA and participate in volunteer projects to help meet our mission of eliminating hunger in Alaska. Last year, the student volunteers contributed more than 1,000 hours of time and raised nearly $2,000 in the Great Alaskan Bake Sale.
