Canstruction: It all starts with one can
It starts with one can.
2010’s Canstruction opens in Anchorage, February 20 and continues through March 5 at the University Center.
Canstruction is a design/build competition showcasing the talents of architects, engineers, design and construction industry professionals and students they mentor.
Teams will be given only 12 hours on February 19 to defy expectations, logic and gravity as they build fantastic sculptures from thousands of cans of food.
After the de-canstruction on March 6, all donations will be made to Food Bank of Alaska for distribution to statewide food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency feeding programs.
There is no theme this year for the annual art exhibit to allow teams to stretch their imaginations to even greater heights.
Teams competing this year:
American Society of Interior Designers – Alaska Chapter
CH2M Hill
DOWL HKM
Enterprise Engineering
Kumin Associates and Schneider & Associates
RIM Architects
RSA Engineering
R&M Consultants
Judging will take place on Saturday, February 20th with an awards ceremony to follow at 3 p.m. with emcee Amber O’Neill from Mix 103.1.
The judges for the awards ceremony are:
- Dave Cavitt - University Center
- Daniele Foertsch - Architects Alaska
- Brian Hayden - AMC Engineers
- Katie Sevigny - Local Artist
Awards will be made in a variety of categories including Structural Ingenuity and Best Use of Labels.
Bring a couple of cans of food and vote for your favorite sculpture in the People’s Choice category – one can = one vote.
Canstruction competitions are held in cities throughout North America.
Since its inception in 1992, ten million pounds of food has been donated to aid in the fight against hunger.
This year’s event is organized by a steering team comprised of staff of Food Bank of Alaska, and local engineers and architects.
