Holiday season a success thanks to community
Happy New Year! Everyone at Food Bank of Alaska extends a special thank you to our community for helping us make this holiday season brighter for the estimated 32,000 Anchorage residents in need of food assistance.
On Monday, November 20 the Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing Project distributed food for a complete Thanksgiving dinner to 3,897 families -- approximately 16,000 people in just five hours. Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing is a collaboration of Food Bank of Alaska and the Anchorage faith community, which started in 2004 as a coordinated effort of Thanksgiving food distributions to make sure the most people get the food they need. All food provided was donated by area residents and churches or bought with money donated through the Virtual Turkey Drive and local fundraisers. Special thanks goes to the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Municipality of Anchorage, Changepoint Church, New Northwest Broadcasters and the many individuals and businesses who made contributions to Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing.
Christmas food distribution could not happen without the collaboration of our community efforts either. Food Bank of Alaska is proud to partner with United Way of Anchorage, The Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services, Lutheran Social Services and USMC Toys for Tots for GIFT 2006. GIFT is a community outreach event designed to provide holiday assistance to low-income individuals and families. Each family served received a holiday food box and toys for children. Thanks to the help of hundreds of volunteers FBA packed and distributed 4,500 frozen food boxes and 3,213 turkeys during the evenings of December 18-22.
Hopefully this successful holiday season is an indication of more successes to come in 2007. We at Food Bank of Alaska look forward to the continuous generosity of our community throughout the whole year.
