About AFC

The Alaska Food Coalition (AFC) was founded in 1996, with encouragement from Alaska’s Department of Health and Human Services (now DHSS). While initially focused on increasing resource access for agencies and village councils who distribute food, the coalition has transformed over time to have a greater emphasis on Advocacy and Education. The coalition has never been a 501(c) (3), an IRS requirement for most grant applications, but rather is housed by a fiscal agent who can apply for grants on behalf of the AFC.  The Food Bank of Alaska has been the AFC’s fiscal agent since 2001. The coalition is currently funded through a federal USDA grant, which is administered through the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Division of Public Assistance (DHSS DPA).

Our Vision:

To lead Alaska in addressing the root causes of hunger through research, education and advocacy, and collaboration.

Our Mission:

To strengthen and coordinate public and private nutrition assistance programs, and to education policy makers about Alaskan food needs.
